Day two of the Texas Democratic Convention in El Paso is underway.

The convention began Thursday evening and will continue until Saturday morning. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and newly elected Sen. Molly Cook will be among the local officials in attendance.

Texas Sen. Carol Alvarado says energy is high and Democrats are motivated and united against GOP policies she calls “draconian policies” as she discusses the debate’s hottest topic: rights women.

“It’s not just about whether you’re pro-choice or pro-life or your personal stance on abortion, it’s about the simple fact that in Texas we have taken away that liberty and freedom to women,” Alvarado said. It’s very hypocritical when Republicans beat their chest and say they want less government, but they turn around and adopt policies, I call them, draconian policies on women’s health.”

Other topics covered include immigration, gun reform and public school funding.

Alvarado says Democrats are also preparing to support the state’s candidate, U.S. Congressman Colin Allred, who is aiming to defeat Sen. Ted Cruz in the November election.

“I think he would take care of the issues that are important to Texas. He defended the policies put forward by the Biden administration,” Alvarado said.

She said Abbott claimed he was gaining support for the voucher program because he only needed a few more seats, which he says he has.

“There are going to be horrible extreme policies that Republicans are going to promote and pass, because they have the numbers, and the governor will sign them. Our only recourse will be to the courts.” Alvarado said.

The convention ends Saturday morning.
