Haryana girl went blind in accident 11 years ago; after a cerebral fluid leak, she ran from one hospital to another for surgery | Chandigarh News

Muskan Kapoor, then 13, survived a car accident with multiple skull fractures when she was driving to Delhi with her uncle and brother for a vacation in 2013. Her uncle died and her brother was injured, while Muskan Kapoor suffered severe brain injuries and went blind.

However, Muskan Kapoor, a resident of Shahbad in Kurukshetra and a school topper, took up the new challenges with courage and determination and continued to excel as a student. But her hopes are once again fading as she suffered a cerebral fluid leak. Muskan Kapoor, the daughter of a bank employee and a housewife, is hoping for a miracle to survive after getting “no help from government hospitals”.

“The leak has such an impact that her entire pillow gets wet when she sleeps and when she studies, the pages of her books also get wet as if they have been dipped in water. We tried hard to get her operated on in almost every hospital. She also stayed in PGI Chandigarh for almost two months but did not get proper care and had no option but to seek medical help in other hospitals,” said her father Ravi Kapoor.

From hospitals in Ambala and Jaipur to PGI Chandigarh and Yamunanagar, the family runs from one place to another to get Muskan Kapoor treated.

Muskan Kapoor is currently a postgraduate student at Miranda House, Delhi. After topping class 12 with 94% marks at the Institute for the Blind in Chandigarh’s Sector 26, she did a BA Honours in Hindi from Indraprastha College, Delhi.

Festive offer

Talking about her dream of becoming a lecturer, Muskan Kapoor said, “I don’t know if I can achieve my dream. I heard my parents telling my brother that my situation is not good. But I will continue to keep hoping.”

Her father said he and his son would take turns to take Muskan Kapoor to Delhi for her exams.

“It happens that her clothes get wet during the bus ride due to fluid leakage. Doctors say this happens because cerebrospinal fluid leaks from her brain through her nose. They even say they are not sure whether the surgery she needs will be successful or not,” said Ravi Kapoor.

Since the family did not receive adequate care in government hospitals, they approached a private hospital in Jaipur, where they were told that the operation would cost Rs 800,000.

“We have already spent all our savings on the initial treatment and now the private hospital is demanding Rs 800,000 more… I don’t know what to do,” said the father.

The girl’s brother, Chirag Kapoor, said they got the Ayushman card issued but that didn’t help much. “The private hospital doesn’t even consider the Ayushman card and in government hospitals… nobody really cares… She stayed in the PGI for over 40 days… and then we were told that no appointments were available… So what do we do now?” quipped Chirag Kapoor.
