Driver in critical condition after ‘unknown object’ flies through windshield in Burnaby

“(The car) just kept going after the driver was struck,” the BC Highway Patrol says of a bizarre accident on Highway 1 in Burnaby on Thursday afternoon.

A driver is in critical condition after being struck by an unknown object while driving on Highway 1 in Burnaby on Thursday.

According to BC Highway Patrol spokeswoman Cpl. Melissa Jongema, police received a call shortly before 11:30 a.m. about a car crash near the Grandview exit.

“An unknown object smashed through the windshield of a white sedan, seriously injuring the driver,” she said.

The westbound HOV lane was closed while the BC Highway Patrol investigates.

Jongema said investigators found a rock in the area but could not yet determine whether it hit the car.

The origin of the object is also still unknown.

“Nobody has reported seeing it from an overpass,” Jongema said. “We’re still investigating whether it may have come from another vehicle. Sometimes something just bounces around on the road.”

According to Jongema, investigators are still taking witness statements and searching for dashcam videos to piece together what happened.

“Most people just focused on the car because it just kept driving after the driver was hit,” she said.

Anyone with information about the incident or the dashcam video is asked to call the BC Highway Patrol at 604-526-9744.
