A total of 4 people arrested after a prisoner escaped from California

San Benito County Sheriff Eric Taylor announced on social media that they found the inmate who escaped from the San Benito County Jail Tuesday morning. In total, four people, including the escaped inmate, were taken into custody on charges of aiding and abetting an escape. Taylor said inmate Daniel Lopez Zavala, 38, who has not yet been sentenced, was found in a San Jose hotel room with his girlfriend around 7 p.m. Lopez Zavala’s girlfriend Luz Mendoza, 31, of Hollister, is believed to have helped him escape. Taylor said they recommend she be prosecuted as well for her alleged crimes. Sheriff Taylor also told KSBW 8 that a second woman was arrested Thursday morning in connection with this case. Katrina Folsom was arrested on charges of aiding and abetting Zavala. She was arrested after a car stop. Officers had a warrant for her arrest. It is unknown how much she was involved in Zavala’s escape. Also arrested Thursday was Jose Perez-Gutierrez, 30, of Hollister and Hayward. He was taken into custody for allegedly helping Daniel Lopez Zavala escape, Taylor said. Taylor added they are working to beef up internal security measures to prevent another breakout. They are also working with the county to resolve staffing issues. Lopez Zavala escaped from the correctional facility around 1:50 a.m. Tuesday by jumping over a barbed wire fence while doing “janitorial work,” according to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office. Taylor said they set up a security perimeter around the prison within a minute of the reported escape. His prison pants were found in an open field. A tracking dog tracked the suspect near 1800 Airway Drive and lost the trail there. Investigators believe he was picked up in a car.
