Mother of two dies when car crashes into building at Vermont Square

A 33-year-old mother of two died on Tuesday when she was trapped between a car and a building in the Vermont Square neighborhood.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of W. 46th Street, near Normandie Avenue, where firefighters arrived and found the person trapped between an SUV and a two-story building, a statement from the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The victim, identified as Lisbeth Estrada Rodriguez, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say her husband and two children lived on the same street as the accident scene and she owned a business in the area.

According to investigators, the accident occurred when the driver, now identified as 31-year-old Dwight Williams, turned right at high speed, hitting the woman and throwing her against the building.

Williams, who police said was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, was arrested for vehicular manslaughter.

The driver’s brother told KCAL News that the accident was actually caused by a white van ramming the back of his sibling’s car, which then hit Estrada Rodriguez.

Police say they have very compelling video evidence to refute this claim.

Employees of the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety were called to assess the integrity of the building after the force of the impact.
