22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after accident in Petaluma

PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA – A 22-year-old Santa Rosa man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and other offenses following a car crash in Petaluma Saturday night, police said.

According to police, police received calls around 6:35 p.m. Saturday about an accident near Sonoma Mountain Parkway and Mauro Pietro Drive in which the vehicle struck the center guardrail.

An officer found a Honda Civic that had been traveling north on Sonoma Mountain Parkway and ended up in a southbound lane, police said. The car had front-end damage, but the driver was uninjured, police said.

According to police, the driver showed objective signs of alcohol poisoning as well as signs and symptoms of drug use. He refused to take a breathalyzer test, police said.

According to police, after further investigation, the officer concluded that the driver was driving the vehicle under the influence of a mixture of alcohol and drugs and arrested him.

After being handcuffed, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee, according to police. When the officer searched the suspect, he found a bag containing a substance the officer suspected may be cocaine, police said.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of DUI, obstructing/resisting an officer and possession of a controlled substance, according to police. He was taken to the hospital for a blood draw and then booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
