Raccoon in Emporia killed by dog ​​and infected with rabies

EMPORIA, Va. (WRIC) — A raccoon has tested positive for rabies after it was killed by a pet dog when it entered the dog kennel in Emporia.

According to the Virginia Department of Health, the raccoon entered the dog’s kennel on Chambliss Road in Emporia on Monday, May 20. The dog killed the raccoon, which resulted in the raccoon testing positive for rabies.


“Please notify health authorities or animal control immediately if you live near Chambliss Road and believe your pet(s) have had contact with the infected raccoon,” said Alton Hart, Jr. MD, MPH, MDiv, director of the Crater Health District. “Make sure your pets are vaccinated, especially against rabies.”

The department urges the public to take the following steps to protect their families and pets from rabies:

  • Have all cats, dogs and ferrets vaccinated against rabies and keep their vaccinations up to date.
  • Avoid contact with wild animals or stray cats and dogs.
  • Do not feed wild animals or stray cats and dogs.
  • Report stray animals to your local animal control agency.
  • Do not keep outside food sources near your home.
  • Keep your pets on your property or keep them on a leash.
