Domestic violence incident in Overland Park leads to crime wave in Kansas and Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Overland Park police are searching for an adult male suspect allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident, a shooting and a chase.

Overland Park Police Captain Jeff Burvee said officers were called to an armed confrontation at the corner of W. 83rd Street and Mastin shortly after midnight Friday.

Officers learned that prior to their arrival, an adult male and female were involved in a domestic dispute. As the woman attempted to leave, the man allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking an adult motorist driving through the parking lot. It is unclear if the shooter knew that motorist.

The man who was hit was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The female victim of the domestic assault was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injuries.

After the shooting, the male suspect allegedly attempted to steal another vehicle in the parking lot before eventually disappearing in a vehicle belonging to the family involved in the original disturbance.

Police attempted to locate the vehicle, which was spotted in another county in Kansas. Officers in that county initiated a pursuit, but the male suspect crossed the state line into Missouri and officers ignored the pursuit.

The vehicle, a black Ford Edge, was later found unoccupied in Missouri. The search for the male suspect continued into Friday morning.
