A man is in custody after police said he barricaded himself in a home with a young child during a domestic dispute in Greeley Monday afternoon.

Police arrested 28-year-old Conner Pickering after a standoff that lasted about 50 minutes at a home near Greeley Central High School. According to police, he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, but they have not yet been able to specify the charges.

At 4:21 p.m., Greeley Police were dispatched to a domestic violence disturbance in the 1600 block of 14th Avenue. Police said they were told that a man – later identified as Pickering – forced a female victim out of the home and barricaded himself inside with a small child. Police believe Pickering had access to firearms.

Officers repeatedly called on Pickering to surrender, but after about 50 minutes there was no incident, police said.

Police provided shelter for nearby residents and extracurricular activities at Greeley Central were moved to a safe function – a step below lockdown.

16th Street and 14th Avenue were closed for nearly an hour during the standoff. According to police, there is no further threat to the area.
