An investigation was launched following an incident at a fuel plant; one of them was hospitalized

One person has been taken to hospital following an incident at a biofuel plant that activated the Emergency Medical Services Hazardous Area Emergency Response Team.

Emergency crews were called to the Grenergy biofuel plant on Seal Sands Road in Billingham this morning (Tuesday 7 May).

Cleveland Police, emergency responders and the Great North Air Ambulance all took part in Greenergy – a supplier and distributor of fossil and renewable transportation fuels.

A NEAS spokesman said: “We received a call at 8.54am this morning (Tuesday May 7) with reports of an injured person at an address on Seal Sands Road in Middlesbrough.

“We deployed an ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader and crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and requested assistance from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who were on the scene on the road.

“One patient was taken to James Cook University Hospital for further treatment.”

A Great North Air Ambulance spokesman said: “We were alerted to an incident near Hartlepool at 9am, our medical-led team traveled to the incident in our rapid response vehicle and arrived on scene at 9.22am.”

“The team worked with the North East Ambulance Service to stabilize the patient before escorting him to hospital.

A Grenergy spokesman said: “We can confirm that an incident occurred at our biofuels plant in Teesside this morning.”

“An ambulance was deployed and someone was taken to hospital. We are monitoring the situation and a full investigation is underway.”

Cleveland police and the Health and Safety Executive were also contacted for comment.
