An officer-involved shooting in St. Joseph County is justified, according to an investigation

After several months of investigation, Michigan State Police and the Branch County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that the fatal shooting of a double murder suspect by the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office in August 2023 was justified.

The suspect, 30-year-old David Algarin Jr., led authorities on a chase on Sunday, August 6, 2023, that ended with him being killed in a shootout with officers, News Channel 3 previously reported.

Following the determination, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office officials said the following:

“I am proud of the hard work and dedication of the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s deputies involved in this incident,” said Undersheriff Jason Bingaman.

“They relied on their training and experience to stop the threat and ensure the safety of the community,” he added.
