Number of road deaths in Saudi Arabia falls by 54 percent

RIYADH: The Saudi Health Sector Transformation Program reports a 54 percent decline in the death rate from traffic accidents in 2023. The rate will then be 13.6 deaths per 100,000 people, compared to 28.41 deaths per 100,000 people in 2016.

The report also pointed to a decline in injuries from road accidents, which amounted to 70.87 percent per 100,000 people, compared to 74 injuries per 100,000 people in 2016.

According to the report, 77 percent of the country’s roads met road safety standards and 46 percent of vehicles met current requirements and standards for regular inspections.

The World Health Organization praised the significant decline in the number of road deaths over the past five years.

The authorities of the traffic safety system and safety committees have made significant efforts to reduce the number of serious traffic accidents. These efforts include implementing technical improvements to roads, providing basic safety requirements, improving traffic control, activating air rescue services and creating specialized medical centers.
