Officials from Iberia and St. Mary parishes send condolences on the death of a Lafayette police officer

(KLFY) — News 10 spoke with several police officers from Iberia and St. Mary parishes about Thursday’s events that led to the death of Lafayette police officer Corporal Segan Jolivette. They all said that while that is the risk police take, it is never easy to deal with events like what happened.

“I told my wife I wish it was me and not him,” said Jeanerette City Marshal Fernest Martin.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were present during Thursday’s standoff, including Baldwin police. News 10 spoke with Baldwin Police Chief Anthony Gibson about the sacrifices law enforcement makes every day when they step out of the door.

“Officers should be commended for the job they do because their lives are at stake every day,” Gibson said.

Sheriff Tommy Romero of Iberia Parish spoke about the dangers involved in protecting and working for the community. He said executing a warrant is one of the riskiest jobs they perform, which is why every precaution must be taken.

“Unfortunately, this situation has arisen and developed like this. We are all very sad about it,” said Romero.

All of the police officers News 10 spoke to said the same thing: They appreciate Corporal Jolivette’s service and the sacrifice he made.
