Police charge man injured in West Philadelphia mass shooting with murder – NBC10 Philadelphia

Police officials have filed charges following Sunday’s mass shooting in which three men, including two brothers, were killed and six others injured during a party in West Philadelphia’s Carroll Park neighborhood.

On Tuesday morning, Philadelphia Police Department Deputy Chief Frank Vanore posted information about the charges on social media.

Police have charged 28-year-old Tahir Shoatz, who was shot in the shoulders and knees, as one of the suspected perpetrators in the incident.

In his online post, Vanore said investigators, with assistance from the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, had gathered enough evidence to charge Shoatz with three counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder and related offenses.

Officials also identified the three deceased men Tuesday morning: Akil Jones, 33, who was pronounced dead at the scene along with his brother Rashie Jones, 29, and 23-year-old Sakayi Robinson.

City officials met Monday to discuss the incident, saying it occurred following an altercation that escalated into a violent shootout.

“This was a gun battle,” Philadelphia Police Chief Kevin Bethel said Monday. “This wasn’t just one person coming down the block and shooting nine people.”

It was an incident that will not go unpunished, said Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker.

According to police, the mass shooting occurred Sunday during an unregistered street party attended by about 100 to 150 people near the intersection of Alden Street and Girard Avenue in West Philadelphia around 2 a.m.

Speaking to NBC10 at the scene on Sunday, Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace said one of the killings was likely targeted, as a 33-year-old man – now identified as Akil Jones – was shot at “very close range.”

According to official information, the investigation is still ongoing.
