A 70-year-old woman is in critical condition after being attacked with a chainsaw on Monday afternoon.

The website Nola.com reports that the attack took place shortly before 2 p.m. in Gentilly Terrace in New Orleans. Two New Orleans police officers were also injured in the incident.

The woman was taken to a hospital along with the two officers. The woman’s arm was reportedly severed in the attack.

John Pittman, 34, was arrested at the scene and later booked into the New Orleans Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault by laceration and resisting arrest.

Pittman’s victim, identified by neighbors as his mother, fled to a relative’s home before seeking medical help. Neighbors said Pittman suffered from mental health issues and was not taking his medication.
