“Alarm”: Deadly mosquito virus is spreading

The Murray Valley encephalitis virus was detected for the first time this year in mosquitoes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Residents and travelers are urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

A similar warning had previously been issued for the state’s Kimberley region.

According to the Western Australian Department of Health, mosquito sampling serves as an early warning of mosquito-borne virus activity.

Lead scientist Andrew Jardine said the recent activity was not unusual at this time of year in northern Western Australia.

“The Pilbara community and travellers to the area can reduce their risk of MVE by protecting themselves from mosquito bites,” Dr Jardine said.

“Fortunately, no community member has been infected with MVE yet, but it is best to remain vigilant.”

Symptoms include fever, drowsiness, headache, stiff neck, nausea and dizziness.

Dr. Jardine urged anyone experiencing these symptoms after a mosquito bite to seek medical attention.

“Although the risk of infection and disease is low, the disease caused by MVE can be serious and even fatal,” he said.

“Young children may initially only experience fever and parents should urgently contact their doctor or local health service if their child feels drowsy, weak or generally unwell.”
