Pune: A 15-year-old boy died on his way to school when a car hit his bike from behind in Kalyaninagar around 8:30 am on Saturday. Yerawada police arrested the auto driver. Police said it was the victim’s birthday and he was carrying sweets for his classmates. Senior Inspector Ravindra Shelke of Yerawada police said, “The boy, Shashwat Ram Bhongade (15) of Kalyaninagar, was riding his bike from home on East Avenue Road in front of Marigold Complex towards his school when the accident occurred. He was an X student.” “The boy was rushed to a private hospital in Yerawada where he was declared dead on arrival,” he said. “All preliminary medical reports of the auto driver suggested that he was not drunk,” Shelke said. Chandrashekhar Bhongade, the victim’s uncle, said, “My nephew used to ride his bike to school every day and his father followed him on his two-wheeler. Today he had forgotten his water bottle, so his father went home to get it. His father was three to four minutes late when the accident happened.” Bhongade said, “The police CCTV footage shows that the car crushed my nephew’s bike and he fell. The driver of the car got out and picked up my nephew. He was bleeding profusely. The driver took my nephew to the hospital.” Bhongade said it was his nephew’s birthday and he was excited to go to school. “He had sweets with him and his father had also given him money to buy a birthday cake. The money was in his pocket and the sweets were in the bag.” The victim’s parents are technicians with a private company. He has a 10-year-old sibling.
