Florida man arrested for alleged threats against Trump and Vance

JUPITER, Fla. – A Florida man who police say made threats on social media against former President Donald Trump and his vice presidential running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance, has been arrested less than a week after a suspected assassin opened fire at Trump’s rally.

Police in Jupiter, Florida, said on Friday that Michael M. Wiseman would be charged with written death threats after investigations revealed that he had made multiple threats against Trump, Vance and their families.

Trump was injured in the attack during his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last Saturday. One participant died and two others were injured.

Trump is fresh from the Republican National Convention, where he thanked Americans for their support in his first speech since the shooting. This week, Trump announced that “Hillbilly Elegy” author Vance is his running mate.

According to a statement from Jupiter Police, officers were alerted by numerous online reports of crime as well as contacts from residents who had raised their concerns in person.

After examining the reports and reviewing Wiseman’s Facebook account, investigators found that he had made multiple threats to Trump and Vance. Wiseman also allegedly made threats “of physical harm” against the Trump and Vance families.

USA TODAY has reached out to an attorney representing Wiseman, who is 68, according to court records. He appeared in court Saturday and is scheduled to appear in court again in August.

Local police coordinated the investigation with the U.S. Secret Service and the Palm Beach County District Attorney’s Office. Wiseman was taken into custody without incident, police said.

Jupiter is about 20 miles from Palm Beach, where Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate is located.

Following the shooting, several people across the country were fired or quit their jobs for making offensive jokes on social media or expressing their unhappiness that the shooter missed.
