Fraud Alert: Florida Attorney General Shuts Down Fake Sunpass Websites

This morning in Orlando, Ashley Moody, Florida Attorney General warned Florida residents about a new smishing scam targeting drivers. According to an official release from Moody’s office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that scammers are sending fraudulent text messages to individuals demanding unpaid tolls and providing links to pay the alleged debt. However, these links are malicious and designed to steal victims’ money. These scams also target E-ZPass users. Attorney General Moody’s Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unitwork with Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) recently shut down 10 scam websites.

“Cybercriminals are sending text messages to thousands of unsuspecting drivers in the hopes that some of them will be tricked into paying a toll for a violation that never occurred.” Moody said. “As this smishing scam takes place across the country, our Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit has worked closely with FDLE to shut down ten fraudulent websites designed to mimic the official SunPass website and steal payments from drivers using their received fake text messages.”

Vaden Pollard, deputy commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement commended the Moody’s team for providing FDLE with the resources to handle such a digital fraud case.

“FDLE’s Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit was able to quickly seize the fraudulent websites and stop the victimization,” Pollard said. “Thanks to Attorney General Ashley Moody, FDLE has the investigative resources and expertise to act quickly when it matters most.”
