Active surveillance cameras on school buses in Buffalo, New York

Summer school is in session in many school districts across Western New York, and a new program is now active for the Buffalo School District.

Traffic cameras have been installed on every Buffalo School District bus and these cameras will be used to catch people passing stopped school buses.

Buffalo Mayor Bryon Brown announced that the city’s school district has partnered with a national company called Bus Patrol to install cameras to catch and ticket drivers who pass a school bus stop.

“It is extremely dangerous to pass a stopped school bus. Our children ride on these school buses every day. We must take every precaution to ensure students can get to and from school safely,” said Mayor Brown. “This is a new initiative that will help ensure the safety of students as they board and exit school buses in the City of Buffalo.”

Cameras have been installed on the arm of the school bus stop sign and will activate when the arm is extended. Using an artificial intelligence program, the cameras will look for drivers who have passed a stopped school bus.

The cost of installing and operating the cameras will not be paid by taxpayers. The bus patrol will cover the costs and in return, it will take a percentage of the fines collected.
