A 13-year-old girl in Texas was reportedly attacked during her bus ride home from school last month.

Police are investigating after the Denton middle school student was allegedly attacked by another student and an adult. Speaking to CBS News Texas, the unnamed girl recalled being threatened by the other girl before the April 23 incident.

“She said if I didn’t keep her name secret she would beat me up,” said the girl, whom the station called “Nicole” for anonymity reasons.

Later that day, while both girls were on the bus in the 1600 block of East McKinney Street, Nicole said her classmate hit her in the back of the head because she refused to get off the bus and got into a fight with her. Shortly after the argument began, she realized the other girl’s mother had joined in when she heard her shout “mommy.”

In a video obtained by CBS News Texas, a person can be seen pulling Nicole’s hair and hitting her as she lies on the ground in front of the school bus. In another clip, two people can be seen hitting Nicole while she sits on the bus.

According to a statement from the Denton Police Department (DPD) obtained by PEOPLE, the bus driver called 911 to report the assault shortly after 4 p.m. local time.

Nicole told CBS News Texas that although her classmate and the adult female got off the bus and left her alone for a moment, they followed the bus in their car and attacked her as she got off at the stop. Nicole’s mother called 911 to report the attack on her daughter around 4:15 p.m., DPD said.

“Responding officers found an injured 13-year-old girl who was evaluated by medics and was not transported to the hospital,” DPD said in its statement.

“I didn’t deserve it,” Nicole told CBS News Texas about the attack. “I don’t think any child deserves to go through something like that.”

Nicole’s mother also claims the bus driver failed to stop the attack.

“If he had locked the door, called for help and waited for the police to arrive, these grown adults would not have been able to get on a bus, attack my child, and they would not have been able to follow the bus and “I continue to attack her,” Nicole’s mother told CBS News Texas. “And then while (the adult) was out there fighting them…he just drove away.”

In conversation with the Denton Record ChronicleDenton Independent School District officials could not comment on the impact on the student involved in the attack due to privacy concerns, but noted that a student would not be allowed to return to the middle school campus.

“This horrific video shows unacceptable behavior that Denton ISD never tolerates, including an adult unlawfully boarding a school bus,” said a school district statement sent to the school Denton Record Chronicle and CBS News Texas. “The altercation was about a conflict that started in a neighborhood and spread to the school grounds, the school bus.”

“Per district policy, the driver immediately called and requested police assistance,” the district’s statement continued. “For safety reasons, drivers are not permitted to use their personal cell phones on the bus.”

According to DPD, the case is being investigated by the department’s Special Victims Unit as an “injury to a child.”

“Although no arrest has been made at this time, investigators have identified the adult suspect and are continuing to pursue the case,” DPD said in its statement. “A further update is expected in the next few days.”
