A Fort Collins middle school teacher was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of sexually abusing students, police said.

Evan King, 50, was a teacher and assistant track and field coach at Lincoln Middle School in the Poudre School District in Fort Collins for about nine years before being placed on leave in April.

In April, school district officials reported King to Fort Collins police and told officers there were allegations that King had repeatedly inappropriately touched students, according to a news release Wednesday. King was immediately placed on leave.

After a four-month investigation, Fort Collins officers arrested King on Wednesday on suspicion of four counts of sexual assault, including one count suggesting a series of sexual assaults, the police news release said.

The Larimer County District Attorney has not filed formal charges against King, and final charges are pending.

During the investigation, officers identified two juvenile female victims and several students who came forward as witnesses, the police news release said. Investigators believe there may be more victims and are asking any other students who were targeted by King to come forward.

“This is an intolerable abuse of his responsibility as an educator and we are saddened by the prospect that there could be more victims,” said Kristy Volesky, spokeswoman for the Fort Collins Police Department. “Our investigators and the Victim Assistance Unit are working to ensure these students receive the support they need during this difficult and emotional time. Now that King has been arrested, we hope any additional victims feel safe to come forward.”

Anyone who believes they or their child may have been a victim, or anyone with additional information about King’s behavior, should contact Criminal Investigation at 970-221-6340 or Larimer County Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868.
