Hamden police arrested a man after a shotgun incident last month

Multiple charges are being filed against 44-year-old David Bertuglia for allegedly shooting multiple people and Hamden police vehicles with pellets.

HAMDEN, Conn. – An arrest has been made following a shotgun incident last month in Hamden in which several people were shot with pellets, according to Hamden police.

Hamden police arrested 44-year-old David Bertuglia on Thursday in connection with a pellet gun incident, according to a release from Hamden police.

Police said Bertuglia was charged with first-degree assault – aggravated assault, first-degree assault – discharge of a firearm, carrying a dangerous weapon, reckless endangerment, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.

On April 24, at approximately 4:55 p.m., Hamden police responded to the area of ​​Spruce Bank Road after a person fishing reported being shot in the arm by what appeared to be a pellet gun as they fled in a vehicle; At this point, officers were unable to locate the vehicle or the suspect.

According to police, at 6:48 p.m. that evening, Hamden police responded to the area of ​​Ives Street and Spruce Bank Road after a 911 call reporting a person had been shot. Hamden police said they found a victim with injuries consistent with being shot multiple times in the face, although it was not immediately clear what type of weapon was used.

According to police, they located a suspect who was still at the scene and appeared to be holding a rifle. The suspect pointed the gun at his own head and threatened to harm himself. As the officers spoke to the suspect from behind cover, the suspect pointed the gun at the officers and began shooting, police said. Police noted that officers realized the weapon was an air pistol when it hit police vehicles and caused damage.

Police said officers attacked the suspect with “less-lethal” bean bag projectiles that struck the suspect. The suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital after suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police say Bertuglia was identified as a suspect and charged. According to police, Bertuglia was held on a $500,000 fine.
