Troy police are working to identify a man who drowned in the Hudson River on Monday, July 8, 2024, after his bicycle plunged over an embankment into the river, according to police, as he allegedly tried to flee from questioning by a patrol officer. (NEWS10)

TROY, NY (NEWS10) — The investigation is ongoing and police are working to identify a man who died in the Hudson River in the city of Troy on Monday.

Troy patrol officers were in the area of ​​2nd Avenue and 116th Street after receiving complaints from the public about suspicious activity in the area. An officer in a marked vehicle attempted to question a man on a bicycle, police said.


According to police, the officer repeatedly ordered him to stop, but the man continued riding his bicycle and fled from the officer. According to police, he rode onto 1st Avenue while the officer followed him with his blue lights and siren on. The cyclist continued through a backyard and over an embankment into the Hudson River.

The officer deployed a water rescue device while a second officer entered the water. Rescue efforts continued with assistance from the Troy Police Department and the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team. The man was found dead underwater.

Police are working to identify the man and the New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations has been notified.

According to police, footage from dashcams and body-worn cameras is expected to be released.
