Ukrainian drone attack burns down Russian ammunition facility in Voronezh

A Ukrainian drone attack burned down a Russian ammunition depot in the Voronezh region near the border between the two countries, Russian and Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday.

“Several drones were detected and destroyed by air defense systems over the Voronezh region overnight,” regional governor Alexander Gusev wrote on Telegram, according to the AFP news agency.

“Their falling debris sparked a fire at a depot” in Podgorensky District, about 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Rescue workers were on site and Gusev said residents living near the depot were being evacuated.

“Explosives began to detonate,” the regional governor said, adding that there was no indication that anyone had been injured.

An unnamed Ukrainian defense official told AFP that the country’s drones attacked the ammunition factory during a night operation.

The source said that “the enemy had stored surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, shells for tanks and artillery, and boxes of ammunition at the facility.” The facility was attacked by drones, which caused a “strong” explosion.

Since the start of the Russian military campaign in February 2022, both Russia and Ukraine have made extensive use of drones, including large explosive devices that can fly hundreds of kilometers.

This year, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian soil, focusing on energy facilities allegedly supplying the Russian military, as well as towns and villages near the border.
