Atlanta Hosts 55th Peachtree Road Race

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – On July 4, Atlanta won’t just be enjoying fireworks and hot dogs. As is tradition, the city will also host the 55th AJC Peachtree Road Race, otherwise known as the world’s largest 10K race!

The 10km race starts at 7am in front of Lenox Square Mall and ends at Piedmont Park. More than 50,000 people are expected to take part in dozens of waves, while more than 100,000 spectators cheer them on.

07:28 | Sabastian Sawe wins the men’s elite division. He is also a distance runner from Kenya. This is his second race on American soil and his first win at the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

07:21 | Stacey Ndiwa, a long-distance runner from Kenya, wins the elite women’s category.

7am | The men’s elite division, ranked riders and the first wave of non-elite riders take flight.

6:43 | Daniel Romanchuk won the men’s wheelchair race. He is a Paralympic athlete from Maryland who had previously won the race six times.

6:35 | Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens made an appearance at the race. He said last year was his first time running in the race and that he plans to run again today.

“People from all over the world, and I heard there were about 20 countries represented, and there were representatives from all 50 states,” he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I’m excited about what we’re going to see today.”
