Officer shoots armed suspect during standoff at Lynchburg motel, police say

LYNCHBURG, Virginia. – A man is dead after being shot by Lynchburg police at a Super 8 motel Thursday night, Lynchburg police said.

At around 8 p.m., officers were called to 3736 Candlers Mountain Road to arrest a wanted man whose identity has not yet been determined.

The department said he was armed, took a woman hostage and locked himself with her in a hotel room.

When officers attempted to negotiate with him, he refused to put down his weapon, whereupon an officer shot him with a service weapon.

The man received medical treatment but did not survive, according to Lynchburg police. The woman was taken to a local hospital. None of the officers were injured in the incident.

The officer in question will be on restricted duty for the duration of the internal investigation and the state police will initiate their own investigation.
