Fake Nihangs in Jal district kidnap and rape student; 3 arrested

Jalandhar: A 23-year-old student was raped after being abducted at midnight on Monday. According to police, two of the three accused were wearing Nihang clothes though they were not Nihangs. They threatened their friends and took them away and one of the group raped her. The three were arrested on Tuesday. Baljit Singh Hundal, SHO of Patara police station, said the rape survivor and her two or three friends were walking in Rama Mandi area after having dinner there. The three accused came on a bike and snobbishly asked who the girl was and what they were doing there. They frightened her male friends and said they would take the girl to her home. “One of them stayed there and two took her to a lonely place on the bike and then one of them raped her,” the SHO said. When the girl later contacted her friends, they complained to the police and took her to a government hospital. On Tuesday, police arrested the three accused and on Wednesday, a local court remanded them in police custody for a day. SHO said that the two – Manjit Singh and Amanjot Singh – who had worn the Nihang attire were not actually Nihangs and had disguised themselves as them to scare the victim and her friends. Amanjot, who had raped her, is a student at a local college while Manjit and the third accused Ranbir Singh worked at private places. All of them were in their early twenties. One of the accused had given her his phone number, which helped the police trace the gang.
