84-year-old woman and 9-month-old girl killed in mobile home fire in Liberty County, near Cleveland airport, officials say

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) – An 84-year-old woman and a nine-month-old girl were killed in a mobile home fire in Liberty County Tuesday night, officials said.

Sadly, both were dead when firefighters arrived, authorities confirmed to ABC13.

According to the Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department, the emergency call came in around 7:50 p.m. on County Road 2198, about three miles east of Cleveland Municipal Airport.

The fire broke out in a rural part of Liberty County; Tarkington was the closest fire site.

A volunteer firefighter from Tarkington was first on the scene and entered the mobile home alone, officials said. He found the woman and pulled her from the building. She was already dead.

When additional emergency services arrived, firefighters searched for the baby. She was found dead in a bedroom.

Chief Paul Gregory of the Tarkington Fire Department said a strong fire came from the living room, but firefighters were unable to isolate the room because the door was already ablaze.

The flames were quickly extinguished, Gregory said.

The fire marshal is expected to arrive late Wednesday morning to investigate the fire scene.

ABC13 is working to determine the relationship between the victims.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
