Channel 2 Action News met with the USMNT players Tuesday after their first practice.

While the team has only been on the field in Atlanta for 24 hours, goalkeeper Matt Turner told us he can feel the city’s love for soccer. He expects the local audience to energize them.

“We know the fan turnout at Mercedes-Benz for Atlanta United is really good. And we hope to see some of that and feel that energy from the crowd on Thursday night,” Turner said.

This will be the second time in a week that the Benz will host some of the world’s best players and teams following Lionel Messi and Argentina’s victory over Canada.

For the USMNT, they opened the tournament with a 2–0 victory over Bolivia led by captain Christian Pulisic and a Meanwhile, Panama lost their first match against Uruguay.

A victory for the USMNT would allow them to qualify for the round of 16.

The Copa America is something of a tune-up for the city. Atlanta only hosts two matches in this tournament, but will host eight matches, including the semifinal, during the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.
