Japanese mother and child injured in attack in Suzhou, China

A bus carrying students from a Japanese school in the city of Suzhou in the Chinese province of Jiangsu was attacked on Monday by a man believed to be Chinese. Two Japanese were injured in the incident and a Chinese woman is in critical condition.

Officials at the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai said the man was armed with some kind of knife. The attack occurred as the bus carrying the children from school arrived at a bus stop.

A Japanese mother and her child who were at the bus stop suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital. A Chinese bus attendant was in critical condition after being stabbed.

The man was arrested and is being investigated by the authorities.

The bus stop is in a residential area about one kilometer north of the Japanese school. There is an apartment complex nearby with many Japanese residents.

As a precautionary measure, the school has decided to close the school on Tuesday.

The Japanese Consulate General dispatched officials to the scene to gather more information and also called on local authorities to strengthen security measures and take steps to prevent a recurrence of the incident.
