Buddhist monks march through Western New York

Keep an eye out today if you’re driving anywhere in Western New York. You may see Buddhist monks while traveling.

You may see Buddhist monks on the side of the road today as they travel around the country.

Why are there Buddhist monks in the streets?

It’s a march for peace. The Buddhist monks began their journey in March in Key West and traveled the country simply to spread peace and kindness. They just entered New York this past weekend and stayed in Ripley, New York to close out their 84th day.

They cover about 30 miles and walk about 10 hours a day.

How long will they walk?

The march began March 31 and will conclude with a final ceremony in Niagara Falls on Saturday. They will be crossing Western New York on foot for the rest of the week.

They don’t carry change

The monks have nothing on them in the way of currency or property. They literally just have the dresses on their backs. This means they rely on the kindness of others for food and shelter. Local people in the region provide them with food and water.

Here is their remaining schedule

You’ll see them coming through Western New York this week. Here are the cities and days they hope to arrive:

Monday – Hamburg (They hope to stay somewhere in the Wannakah Beach area)

Tuesday – They hope to arrive in Grand Island by Tuesday and will stay there the rest of the week before ending with a ceremony in Niagara Falls.
