Tamayo Perry, surfer and actor, killed by a shark in Hawaii

Professional surfer, lifeguard and actor Tamayo Perry, 49, was killed by a shark while surfing near the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Sunday, officials said.

Tamayo was known as a big-wave surfer and lifeguard on Oahu, home to some of the world’s best surfing spots like Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay.

He became better known through his appearances in the surfing film “Blue Crush” (2002), “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (2011) and in the television series “Hawaii Five-0” (2011).

Emergency services were called to assist a shark bite victim, and Ocean Safety Services rescued Perry from the ocean on a jet ski, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman Shayne Enright told reporters Sunday.
