A three-digit heat index is expected again on Monday, rain is possible on Wednesday

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – Good morning and happy Monday!

Weather days of the first warning for today and Tuesday: A weak cold front is moving through central Alabama this morning, bringing scattered showers. Temperatures will be between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit this morning. Humidity will rise briefly this morning, especially in western Alabama. Dew points could rise to 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, which could make temperatures feel a bit warmer. Today we’ll likely see highs between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat index will likely rise to 100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit this afternoon.

First weather warning day continues until Tuesday: I believe we will see the highest temperatures this week on Tuesday afternoon. Morning temperatures will likely be between 70 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit, with mostly clear skies. Highs are expected to rise above 95 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday afternoon, with some locations reaching 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Factoring in higher humidity in western Alabama, the heat index there could reach as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The rest of our area will not see as much humidity, but even the dry heat will still be dangerous. Tuesday will continue to be very dry, so there is a small chance of an isolated shower or storm cooling us down.

Isolated thunderstorms Wednesday: If you’re hoping for some much-needed rain, I think Wednesday is the best chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. A disturbance to the northwest will move southeast, giving us a 40 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in central Alabama. Wednesday will be partly sunny, with morning temperatures starting around 75 degrees. Highs on Wednesday should be cooler thanks to cloud cover and a higher chance of rain, but it all depends on the timing of the thunderstorms’ arrival. We’ll likely see highs in the 90s to 100s.

The next big thing

A few strong storms could develop on Wednesday. The main dangers are damaging winds, small hail and frequent lightning. A few persistent showers and storms are possible on Thursday, with rain chances as low as 20%.

Looking ahead: The second half of this week will likely remain hot and humid. Highs next Thursday and Friday will likely rise to 35 to 40 degrees, with nighttime lows of 24 degrees. Humidity will also rise, so the heat index could fluctuate between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius next weekend. Next weekend, we’ll likely have to rely on sudden thunderstorms to cool us down. I don’t see any signs of “cool” air over the next seven days. Welcome to summer in the Southeast!

7-day forecast
7-day forecast(WBRC)

Tropical Update: The disorganized area of showers and thunderstorms we have observed in the Gulf near Mexico is unlikely to develop into a tropical event; however, this low will continue to bring additional rainfall and possible flooding to parts of Mexico. No tropical activity is expected in Alabama for the next seven days.

If you’re planning a vacation to Alabama’s Gulf Coast this week, expect moderate surf danger for the next three days. Be cautious if you plan to go in the water. Purple flags are flying on Alabama beaches to indicate marine life in the water (like jellyfish). Water temperatures are around 82 degrees. Waves will remain choppy, but not as strong as days ago.

The hurricane season peaks in September and ends on November 30th.
