Rapist Wayne Wilmot sent back to prison after violating parole

Less than two weeks after Wayne Wilmot was released from prison, the member of the gang that kidnapped, raped and killed Sydney bank employee Janine Balding is back behind bars for allegedly searching for child abuse material on his mobile phone.

Wilmot, 51, a serial sex offender, was placed under a restraining order that includes electronic monitoring, a curfew and drug abstinence upon his release from prison earlier this month.

On Friday morning, officers monitoring his phone reportedly found evidence of searches, including one for “very, very extreme” pornography, which was a breach of the terms of his probation order, police sources who were not authorized to speak publicly told the Herald.

Wilmot was charged with breaching his restraining order and arrested to appear at Waverley Local Court on Friday afternoon.

He has not applied for bail and will remain in custody for a further two weeks while the Attorney General decides whether to refer the case to the Magistrates Court, where the maximum sentence is two years, or to the District Court, where a conviction for breaching a supervision order can carry a five-year prison sentence.

Wilmot wore a black T-shirt and did not speak as he sat in the dock at Waverley Local Court, but he gave his legal aid lawyer a thumbs up as he returned to his cell at neighbouring Waverley Police Station.

Wilmot was first imprisoned as a teenager and has since spent over 30 years behind bars, with the exception of a 20-month sentence in the 1990s, during which time he committed several violent and sexual assaults against women.

Wilmot was one of five youths who forced Balding into their car at knifepoint at Sutherland railway station on 8 September 1988.

According to the facts, Wilmot drove while Balding was sexually assaulted on the way. He stayed in the car with a girl while three others tied up Balding and drowned him in a reservoir in Minchinbury.
