Exclusive: Donegal gymnastics coach suspended as Gardai launch investigation

A Donegal-based gymnastics coach has been suspended by Gymnastics Ireland following allegations of inappropriate conduct.

The male coach has been dismissed by Gymnastics Ireland, the sport’s national governing body, and an investigation into the allegations is ongoing.

The coach belongs to a club affiliated to Gymnastics Ireland.

While the coach is suspended, the Garda is currently investigating the matter and the authorities remain in contact with the relevant authorities.

“Gymnastics Ireland has been made aware of a matter which has been reported to An Garda Síochána,” a Gymnastics Ireland spokesperson confirmed to Donegal Live.

“In accordance with our policies and standard procedures, we have immediately suspended the individual concerned pending the outcome of the Garda investigation.

“We cannot comment further while this process is ongoing. We remain in contact with the relevant authorities.”

The coach in question worked primarily with underage gymnasts.

Donegal Live has learned that a young person has raised concerns with a parent about alleged contact of a sexual nature by a coach.

It is believed that the initial allegation later led to further complaints of a similar nature.

A Garda spokesman confirmed receipt of a complaint and said that “a Garda investigation is currently underway”.

No further information was available, the spokesman said.

Donegal Live has learned that the Garda have been called into the case and statements have been taken from several parties.

It is believed that Tusla – Child and Family Agency was also involved in the matter.

Tusla is the government agency responsible for improving children’s wellbeing and future prospects.

A spokesman said they do not comment on individual cases “to protect the privacy of the children and families we work with.”
