Rain spoils Juneteenth celebrations in Houston area, hampers traffic

How long will the rain fall? Can we expect drier conditions for the rest of the week? Here’s what you can expect.

All forecasts suggest that Wednesday morning will be the most complicated for most people. Widespread showers are expected around dawn, with areas of heavier rainfall and even some rumbles of thunder expected.

Morning and early afternoon flooding is most likely south of Houston. However, roads in the area will be wet and you will likely still have difficulty getting to work. If you have to drive to Houston from Sugar Land or Pearland, be prepared for heavier rain on your morning commute.

An additional inch or two of precipitation is expected before the rain finally begins to spread.

Wet weather is expected to improve slowly through Wednesday. Rain will decrease from east to west through early afternoon, with areas like Brenham and Rosenberg likely to be among the last to see widespread rain completely stop.

Model indications suggest the redevelopment of scattered thunderstorms into the early evening as abundant atmospheric moisture persists. This means spotty showers could also slow travel on Wednesday evening.

With humidity nowhere to be seen this week, storm chances will last Thursday through Friday. Unlike Wednesday’s wet weather, storms late in the week will be more typical of what the region experiences during the summer. Storms will develop during the heat of the day, fall on their own, and then dissipate. It’s the rinse and repeat pattern that helps alleviate our high temperatures by around 90 degrees.

Believe it or not, another system in the Gulf of Mexico requires close monitoring through the weekend and into next week.

The National Hurricane Center is not giving a high chance of development, but time will tell regarding this system. What is expected next week is for moisture associated with the aforementioned disorderly tropical system to be drawn toward Texas. Instead of seeing isolated storms in the afternoon, more storms could hit the Houston area through early next week.
