US tourist found dead on Greek island of Mathraki

The body of an American tourist has reportedly been found on the Greek island of Mathraki, adding to the list of foreigners missing or dead during a record heatwave.

A Dutch man was also found dead on Samos at the weekend, following the recent death of British television presenter Dr. Michael Mosley on the island of Symi. Two hikers were also found dead on Crete on 5 June.

Among at least three other missing people is another American, Albert Calibet.

Many, if not all, of the victims were hiking at the time of their disappearance.

The US State Department was asked for comment.

The American found dead in Mathraki was a 55-year-old man, Greek public broadcaster ERT and the Athens News Agency reported on Sunday.

The man, who was on holiday and whose name has not been released, was reportedly last seen alive in a bar last week. His body was found on a deserted beach on the small island and taken to a hospital on the larger neighbouring island of Corfu for an autopsy.

High temperatures are expected to continue in Greece this week as the country suffers its earliest heatwave on record, with winds from North Africa pushing temperatures higher.

Many schools had to close, as did major tourist attractions such as the ancient Acropolis.

On Saturday, officials reported the death of a 74-year-old Dutch tourist who went missing after hiking alone on another island, Samos.

Meanwhile, the search continues for 59-year-old Albert Calibet, a retired police officer from California, who is believed to have disappeared on Amorgos last week after also failing to return from a hike.

According to the French news agency AFP, Greek officials are also searching for two French women aged 73 and 64 on the island of Sikinos.

Earlier this month, officials spent days searching on Symi for Dr. Mosley, a well-known British television doctor who disappeared while setting off for a walk from a beach.

His body was found in a rocky area and investigators concluded that he died of natural causes on the day of his disappearance.
