New B/R trade proposal sends Dejounte Murray to Brooklyn for Dorian Finney-Smith and a pair of first-round picks

The NBA Draft Lottery is four days away and while it’s a long way off, the Atlanta Hawks are hoping to crack the top four and maybe even land the No. 1 pick in the draft . Their position heading into the draft is 10th and they have a 13.9% chance of going top four in the draft and a 3% chance of getting the No. 1 pick.

If they land the No. 1 pick, should Atlanta trade him or take a player (Alex Sarr maybe?). Bleacher Report analyst Zach Buckley suggested a trade for the Hawks if they got the No. 1 pick.

Although there is a “growing belief in many corners of the league” that the Hawks would rather move Trae Young than Murray, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, perhaps landing the No. 1 pick will would change your mind.

The trade: Dejounte Murray to the Brooklyn Nets for Dorian Finney-Smith and two future first-round picks

“If Atlanta believes Alexandre Sarr is the top prospect on the board and agrees with B/R’s Jonathan Wasserman that the French 7-footer has Jaren Jackson Jr.-like potential. , maybe the Hawks would see him as the perfect fit for Young.

Keeping Murray might be safer because it’s easier to build around him. But keeping Young, arguably, offers the highest ceiling, as his blend of scoring and table setting is more potent than anything Murray offers.

Young leaks like an old faucet on defense, but perhaps a frontcourt rotation with Sarr, Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu could cover that.

Finney-Smith would give Atlanta another three-and-D option on the wing, and he would get two first-round picks to help cover any other issues. Package them with Clint Capela’s large (and expiring) salary, and the Hawks should have enough to find Young a better-suited backcourt partner.

While I would like to have the fit that Finney-Smith would offer the Hawks, I think Atlanta could get more for Murray from other teams. Brooklyn’s best assets are the draft picks it got from Phoenix and Mikal Bridges, but it doesn’t appear the Nets are eager to deal Bridges anytime soon. If Atlanta decides to move Murray, I think they will be looking for players to retool around Trae Young, not a pick-centric package.

Atlanta will be one of the more interesting teams to watch this offseason. It seems likely that the backcourt duo of Murray and Trae Young is headed for a split and that Atlanta will reorganize around one of these players. Chances are Atlanta will look a lot different by the time the new season begins.
