Former Stevens Point paramedic charged with sexual assault | Top Stories

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WAOW) – Mark Schoeberle, a former Stevens Point emergency medical technician, has been charged with three counts of sexual assault.

The alleged acts are said to have taken place at the Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital around the end of March to the beginning of April this year. According to a criminal complaint, two female victims recalled that Schoeberle had, among other things, touched their breasts inappropriately.

The criminal complaint states that an investigation took place between the Stevens Point Police Department and the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Portage County District Attorney Cass Cousins, there was a conflict of interest that led to Waupaca County taking over the investigation.

Schoeberle was with the Stevens Point Fire Department for many years but will retire on September 8, 2023, according to Fire Chief JB Moody.

The criminal complaint states that Schoeberle was employed by Aspirus Stevens Point at the time of both incidents.

“The law essentially says that certain types of sexual contact, when committed by a staff member on a patient, are a more serious offense,” Cousins said.

All three counts are second-degree sexual assault and each count carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a maximum fine of $100,000.

“Because the damage is both physical and emotional, it often lasts a very long time. Victims often have a lot of fear and uncertainty and complicated emotions as a result, and that’s why we take a very aggressive approach,” Cousins said.

Moody’s and Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza declined to comment on the allegations, both saying it was inappropriate for them to comment on allegations against a former city employee.

Aspirus sent News 9 the following statement:

In the interest of patient and staff safety, the individual was immediately removed from all work duties. Law enforcement authorities were immediately notified and we are cooperating fully. Due to the ongoing investigation, it is not appropriate to comment further at this time. The individual is no longer employed by Aspirus.
