VSP investigates medical emergency of man in VBSO custody

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – Virginia State Police are investigating after a trespassing suspect experienced a medical incident following his admission to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center (VBCC) on Tuesday, according to authorities.

In a press release Sunday, Virginia Beach Sheriff Rocky Holcomb said 34-year-old Rolin Hill was hospitalized after a medical incident at the jail.

Hill was arrested on Tuesday for trespassing, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace. Virginia Beach police took him to jail at around 7:15 p.m., where he was denied bail and booked into jail at around 8:20 p.m. (VBCC).

Due to Hill’s alleged “uncooperative and belligerent” behavior, Sheriff Holcomb said Hill must be detained “for his own safety and the safety of the arresting officers and jailers.”

At approximately 8:45 p.m., Hill suffered a medical emergency that required “immediate attention” from medical personnel and prison officials. He was then transported to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital for further treatment.

Sheriff Holcomb said Hill was still in the hospital on Sunday, but his condition was not released.

“We are investigating the Rolin Hill incident and are committed to a full and comprehensive investigation, which is why I have asked the Virginia State Police to conduct an independent investigation,” Sheriff Holcomb said in a prepared statement. “I cannot comment on the specific facts of the case at this time because the integrity of the investigation must be maintained. As always, I am committed to complete transparency with the community and will disclose the results when the investigation is complete.”

VBSO said the 34-year-old was released from custody on Wednesday, one day after the incident.

No further information was immediately released.
