Tourists found dead in Mexico identified as US and Australian surfers

Three bodies recovered in Mexico last week were those of three tourists who disappeared during a surfing trip, and three people were in custody in connection with their deaths, officials in the country confirmed Sunday.

American Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, of San Diego, and Australian brothers Jake Robinson, 30, and Callum Robinson, 33, disappeared April 27 while traveling in Ensenada, less than 100 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border.

During a news conference, the Baja California state attorney general’s office said the victims were found shot to death at the bottom of a 50-foot well after it appeared the trio tried to intervene in an apparent carjacking.

On Sunday, Mexico made an announcement expressed his condolences the BBC reported after a prosecutor confirmed that relatives of the victims had traveled to the country and identified the bodies of their loved ones.

A fourth body was also found in the well, but it did not appear to be related to the killings of the tourists, the office wrote in a press release. Authorities said the victim had been there for a long time.

Three people arrested in surfer murders

Baja Chief Prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez said an arrest warrant had been issued against Jesús Gerardo “N,” alias “El Kekas,” charging him with enforced disappearances in connection with the case. That suspect, Ramírez said, was in custody Sunday.

Two other people, a man and a woman, were also arrested in connection with the murders, Ramírez announced. Officials did not identify the couple.

Ramírez said officers believed the killers saw the victims’ tents and pickup truck and wanted to steal their tires, but when the victims “came over and caught them, they certainly fought back.”

Weapon casings, blood stains and drag marks were found at the crime scene

The office had previously said it learned about the missing friends through social media and announced that their bodies were discovered during a search of properties near their campsite in the area called La Bocana Santo Tomás.
