Man accused of weapons incident arrested after missing court date

A man accused of a weapons incident on May 6 was arrested after missing a court appearance this week in Vernon County, authorities reported.

The 44-year-old man was scheduled to appear in Vernon County District Court on Wednesday. He was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment of safety (domestic violence), assault (domestic violence), disturbing the peace (domestic violence) and resisting or obstructing an officer, Sheriff Roy Torgerson said in a statement.

An arrest warrant was issued, the man was arrested on Friday and additional charges of jumping bail will be filed, Torgerson said.

On May 6, an altercation occurred at a residence on West Smith Road in the town of Viroqua, during which a gun was reportedly fired. A 41-year-old woman was found safe at another location, Torgerson said.

Officers saw the suspect running in a cornfield and arrested him about 15 minutes after police arrived on the scene. Evidence of a gun being fired was found and a handgun was later found as well, Torgerson said.
