Deadly shooting in San Jacinto captured on surveillance video: Man randomly shoots at passing cars

SAN JACINTO, Calif. (KABC) – Surveillance video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the moment a man armed with a semi-automatic weapon began shooting at passing cars on a busy street in San Jacinto, killing one person.

39-year-old Julio Rodarte was arrested on suspicion of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.

“It’s so sad, you know, very sad,” said Enrique Tores, the owner of E & E Tires, near the crime scene. “There were five or six people working behind the building, you know, and I was afraid he was going to break into my store and start shooting people.”

He said he heard nearly 30 gunshots during the incident.

The incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. Monday on State Street, north of W. 7th Street.

Rodarte apparently first stopped at a local market and tried to buy a glass of alcohol, but did not have enough money. He left the market, shortly after which he allegedly pulled out his gun and opened fire.

First he threw away the magazine, then the weapon. Then, according to Tores, he took off all his clothes.

“He was completely naked and just kept walking. And then they called the police.”

Police soon arrived and arrested him. Several cars were damaged, one man was killed and another injured.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family of 42-year-old Victor Hugo Leon, who was identified as the man who died in the shooting.

The site says Leon leaves behind a wife, three sons and a daughter. He was home after leaving his night shift when he was shot.

“Victor’s smile and sense of humor will be truly missed,” the page says. “He leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him.”
