Chennedy Carter beat up Caitlin Clark after the recent incident

Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter doubles down.

The four-year WNBA player made headlines on Saturday afternoon for her unfair hit on Caitlin Clark. In the third quarter of the first duel between the two teams this season, Carter threw her shoulder at Clark during a throw-in. The Fever star fell to the ground and Carter received a technical foul, which the league upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after the game.

In case you missed it, here is a broader view of the incident:

Although Clark appears to be chirping something at the veteran guard on one end of the court, there is absolutely no excuse for Carter’s decision. And the Sky rightly paid the price, as the team ultimately lost the game 71-70.

Carter had the opportunity to admit her behavior after the game, but she made it clear to reporters that she would not answer any questions about Clark. To add to the drama, she later commented on a video of the post-game press conference on Threads and further criticized Clark for her playing style: “& that’s it, because what else does she bring to the table besides three-point shots,” Carter wrote with a laughing emoji.

Attacking a superstar like Clark rarely ends well, so I’m not sure how much longer Carter plans to keep up this stunt. Not to mention she’s a big reason they lost the game! Taking responsibility and moving on to the next – highly anticipated – Sky Fever matchup on June 16 is probably the right move.

At the same time, the magnitude of this drama speaks volumes about the growth we continue to see in the WNBA. Everyone on the internet seems to have an opinion on what happened, which oddly feels good for the league as a whole. I’m not saying I want Carter to continue with her antics (she should just accept that she was in the wrong), but what’s competition without a little bit of contention?

Sky and Fever have two more matches to come this month and I think we can all agree that these are two must-see games on TV.
