Four boys, including a 12-year-old, arrested on suspicion of rape in Newark

Four boys, including a 12-year-old, were arrested on suspicion of raping a young girl in Newark.

Police received a report that a teenage girl had been attacked on the sports fields in Yorke Drive in the market town of Nottinghamshire between 5.30pm and 7pm on 25 May.

A 12-year-old boy, a 13-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys were released on bail under strict conditions, Nottinghamshire Police said.

Earlier this week, four other teenage boys, two aged 15 and two aged 16, were arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with the attack. All four were held on conditional bail, police said.

Detective Inspector Amy Revill of the police said: “We have made a further four arrests in this case and our investigation continues to progress rapidly.”

He said specially trained officers “continue to support the girl” and “are doing everything we can to find out exactly what happened.”

DI Revill also appealed to local residents and anyone with any information to contact police, adding that he would like to thank the many people who had come forward with enquiries.

Inspector Charlotte Ellam, District Manager for Newark, said: “I understand the concern this incident has caused in our Newark community. But I want to make it clear that the team of detectives investigating this incident are working around the clock and we will find out exactly what happened.”

“We have been carrying out additional patrols in this area and will continue to do so, so if you have any concerns please speak to one of my officers.

“We would also like to ask people to avoid speculation as we go through this process.

“We will keep you updated on the progress of our investigation.”
