Woman with police ID, husband killed by ex-husband in murder-suicide in Magnolia

Delaware State Police have identified those shot in last week’s murder-suicide in Magnolia as a woman and her boyfriend. Police said the woman’s ex-husband was the killer.

Vicky Williams, 38, was found shot to death by Delaware state troopers outside her home in the Barrett Farm subdivision just after 6:15 p.m. on April 29. Hours later, they also found 43-year-old Evan Cablayan and Williams’ ex-husband, 49-year-old Charles Williams III, dead inside.

Neighbors told Delaware Online/The News Journal they were “in shock” after the murder-suicide and said the neighborhood is usually quiet. One man also said he had “no idea they had any problems.”

“We saw her with her kids playing basketball in her driveway,” he said. “Kids ride bikes and skate down this street all the time.”

What happened?

According to police, officers were initially called to the two-story home in the first block of Cilento Drive because of reports of gunshots. Charles Williams also “made contact with a family member, confessed to shooting his wife and her new boyfriend, and expressed intent to take his own life,” Delaware State Police said.

Outside, police officers found Vicky Williams shot multiple times, including in the head, according to radio reports from first responders. Her injuries “are incompatible with life,” the radio said, and she was pronounced dead around 6:50 p.m

According to neighbors, police initially did not enter the house, but instead shouted at least eight or nine times for everyone in the house to come out with their hands up. No one showed up, a neighbor said.

Later, a video shows members of the Delaware State Police SWAT team huddled together behind what appear to be two BearCats, or armored SWAT vehicles. A smaller black vehicle with tank treads and what appeared to be a battering ram on the front was also seen rolling down the street toward the house.

A video shows that police were stationed outside the house until they finally entered after dark. They used what looked like a battering ram to force their way through the front door and screamed as they entered. Just before they broke down the door, at least one shot was heard from inside the house.

Seconds after police opened the door, several more shots were heard.
