The The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has been suspended from his party’s Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State over alleged arrogance, fraud and anti-party activities.

Abure was informed of his suspension through a letter signed by the 3rd District Chairman and Secretary, Thompson Ehiguese and Stanley Usiomoh, respectively.

The letter titled “Suspension of Barr. Julius Abure from Membership of Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Esan North East LGA, Edo State” dated May 14, 2024, reads: “Kindly take note that you have been suspended from Membership of Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Esan North East LGA, Edo State.”

“This decision was taken after careful deliberation by the members of the district, taking into account your arbitrary and anti-party activities in the party administration, as well as countless other allegations of fraud made against you, which are currently under investigation.

“Although this suspension takes effect immediately, you are advised not to impersonate or display yourself as a member of the Labour Party, Ward 3, Arue, Uromi in Esan North East LGA, Edo State.”

Abure’s suspension was ratified by the Labour Party Executive Committee and Esan North East Local Government in a letter signed by Patrick Onogbeni and Ehikioya Eromosele, the party’s Chairman and Secretary in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The letter is dated May 15, 2024, titled: “Ratification of Suspension of Comrade Julius Abure as Member of Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Esan North East LGA,” and addressed to the State Executive Council, Labour Party, Edo State. It reads: “I hereby transmit to you for your consideration the ratification of suspension of Comrade Barr. Julius Abure as Member of Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Esan North East LGA, Edo State.”

“The LGA Executives met today, May 15, 2024, at approximately 12:00 noon to discuss the issues raised in connection with the suspension and accordingly found them to be of weight and confirmed the suspension.”

Labour Party Chairman in Esan North East Local Government, Patrick Onogbeni, said late Friday night while handing over the letters to the state executive committee chaired by State Chairman Kelly Ogbaloi at the party secretariat in Benin that Abure’s suspension had become unavoidable in view of his arbitrary conduct and never-ending anti-party activities.

At the end of the Executive Council’s deliberations on the matter, the LP State Chairman, Ogbaloi, told journalists that the State Executive Council had no choice but to approve the suspension, which was also ratified by the party’s Executive Council in Esan Local Government Area of the North East of the state.

On his part, Patrick Agbontaen, the party’s state vice chairman, said the party had had enough of Mr Abure as he had been accused of numerous corruption allegations and other anti-party activities, adding that the state executive committee was in full agreement with the decision to suspend him until further notice.

But the Workers’ Party’s national spokesman, Obiora Ifo, reacted immediately, saying that Abure’s alleged suspension was a violation of the constitutional procedure for suspending the national party chairman.

He pointed out that Article 17, subsection 1 of the Labour Party’s 2019 Constitution clearly states that only the National Convention, convened for the sole purpose of removing the National Leader, can suspend or remove the Leader by a two-thirds majority.

He also pointed out that neither the district nor the state chairman nor even the state had the authority to suspend the state chairman.

“A high court in Edo has also ruled on this matter. An appeals court has also ruled on this matter.

“This attack is a continuation of the attacks on Abure that were seen during the gubernatorial primaries. This too will not achieve anything and we are not worried,” Ifo said.
