Panthers’ Xavier Legette compared to NFL Scouts’ DK Metcalf

It sounds like Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette could be in for a big year if he lives up to a lofty comparison.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Tuesday that “some scouts see similarities” between Legette and Seattle Seahawks star receiver DK Metcalf, who excelled under former Seahawks offensive assistant and newly hired Panthers head coach Dave Canales .

“Not quite the athlete that Metcalf is, but he has such game-changing ability, and with his versatility as a runner and pass-catcher, he can do a little more,” an NFL personnel evaluator told Fowler.

At 6’3″ and weighing 100kg, Legette is a similar size to Metcalf, who is 6’1″ and 220lbs. Metcalf was a second-round pick in the 2019 draft and went on to become a two-time Pro Bowler, so Carolina is certainly hoping Legette will follow a similar path.

Legette, who was selected with the 32nd pick in the first round of the 2024 draft, spent five years at South Carolina and had a breakout season in 2023 with 71 catches for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns.

Legette will provide a big target and vertical threat to second-year quarterback Bryce Young, who is coming off a forgettable rookie season. The wideout should play an important role as a rookie despite the presence of Panthers veterans Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen.
