APP. 12 NEWS INVESTIGATES AN ALLEGED ATTACK AT A PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN MILWAUKEE. A MOTHER TELLS 12 NEWS OLDER CHILDREN walked into Hartford University Elementary School and attacked their fourth-grader, giving him a concussion. AS 12 NEWS NICK BOHR REPORTS, SHE WANTS TO ANSWER HOW IT HAPPENED. OH, I’m angry. I’m just annoyed, annoyed even. I’m just standing here. It’s hard for Miss Evans to even come back here to Hartford University Elementary School nearby a few weeks ago, um. She says students came into the building and beat her 10-year-old son in a stairwell during school hours. Somehow they left the office and wandered around the building. Nobody stopped them, asked them who they were and what they were doing here. They went into my son’s class and were able to take him out of the classroom, lead him down the hallway into a stairwell, hold him against his will, and allow another student to hit him. IN THE FACE SEVERAL TIMES, RESULTING IN A CONTRACTION. EVANS SAYS HER SON HAD A DISPUTE WITH A CLASS CAMERA THAT THE STAFF TOLD HIM THE OLDER CHILDREN ARE THE SIBLINGS OF THE CLASS GIRLS. EVANS SAYS SHE CALLED THE POLICE WHEN SHE FOUND OUT OF THE ATTACK A FEW HOURS LATER, BUT THE SCHOOL NEVER CALLED MPD. The principal knew about this because when I called her again on the cell phone she said, “I apologize, Miss Evans.” I was dealing with a different situation in which I would normally have called you. SHE SAID. EVANS SAYS THE SHARPEST THING OF ALL IS THAT THERE IS A VIDEO OF HER CHILD BEING ATTACKED AT SCHOOL. THE MANAGERS HAVE SEEN IT, SHE SAYS, BUT REFUSED TO LET IT LOOK AT IT. When I came here and asked to see it, they told me I had no right to see what happened to my son, Evans said. She was told this by an officer. A TEENAGER WAS CAUGHT BUT MILWAUKEE POLICE DID NOT CONFIRM IN 12 MESSAGES IF ANYONE HAS BEEN ARRESTED OR CHARGED. She has since moved her son but says he is still traumatized. ACCORDING TO DISTRICT GUIDELINES, WE HAVE MADE OPEN RECORDS REQUESTS TO MILWAUKEE POLICE TO DETERMINE WHO, IF ANY, HAS BEEN CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH THIS ASSAULT. Mother: Boy targeted by his classmate’s older siblings

A Milwaukee mother is asking the Milwaukee Public School District for answers after her 10-year-old son was attacked at his elementary school. “Oh, I’m angry. I’m upset just standing here,” said the mother, who asked to be identified as Miss Evans. She spoke to WISN 12 News outside Hartford Avenue University Elementary School near the University of Wisconsin. Milwaukee campus on Friday. She said last month high school students broke into the building and beat her son in the stairwell during school hours. “Somehow they left the office, wandered around the building, no one stopped them, asked them who they were and what they were doing here,” Evans said. “They went to my son’s class, were able to take him out of the classroom, lead him down the hallway into a stairwell, hold him against his will and allow another student to punch him in the face multiple times, resulting in a concussion.” Evans said her son had previously had an argument with a classmate, and Evans said school staff told her the older children were the classmate’s siblings. Evans called police when she learned of the attack several hours later, but the school never did so. “The headmistress knew about it because when I called her on the cell phone she said, ‘I’m sorry Miss Evans, I was dealing with a different situation.’ “Normally I would have called you,” she said,” Evans said. Evans said what was most upsetting was there was a video of her child being attacked at school. The administration reviewed it, she said, but refused to let her see it. “When I came here and asked to see it, they told me I had no right to see what happened to my son,” Evans said. Evans said she was told by an officer that a juvenile had been cited but Milwaukee police would not confirm to WISN 12 News whether anyone has been arrested or charged. Evans has since moved her son but said he is still traumatized. “I thought Hartford was a safe place, but they failed to keep my son safe. When I sent my son to school to study, it was her responsibility to ensure his safety. They didn’t do that,” she said. WISN 12 News has reached out to Milwaukee Public Schools for comment. They did not confirm the incident had taken place, citing student confidentiality, but issued a statement: “MPS takes seriously all matters that impact the wellbeing, learning and development of our students. All personnel matters will be handled in accordance with district policy. ” the statement said. Evans said she was seeking an attorney to consider whether a lawsuit would lead to greater transparency.
